Between its opening in 1995 and this photo in April 2004, the iconic turquoise roof structure of Space Mountain: De la Terre à la Lune become something of a memory itself — faded and eventually completely worn away until just this rusty undercoat was visible. The period of decay was so long that the park map introduced in 2002 features the attraction with only a half-turquoise roof, the designer perhaps believing that this was how it was “meant” to look.
Following years of criticism from fans, the attraction was given a comprehensive refurbishment through the whole of 2004 — seen here starting with the Columbiad cannon — that eventually led to its full-scale reinvention as Space Mountain: Mission 2 the following year.
