The main RER (regional express railway) station serving Disneyland Paris is inaugurated. Marne-la-Vallée/Chessy marks the eastern terminus of RER A. Daily public services officially commence the following day, on 1st April 1992, also serving a new station at Bussy-Saint-Georges on the 11 kilometre extension from Torcy. One of two eastern branches on the line which crosses underground through the heart of Paris, RER A was originally extended from Noisy-le-Grand to Torcy on 19th December 1980.
The new line helps not only to connect Disneyland Paris to the huge Parisian public transport system but to transform travel in the rapidly-developing urban area of Marne-la-Vallée. With this intent, the station takes the name of its nearest town, despite sitting right at the heart of Disney’s new property and being difficult to access on foot from the village of Chessy itself. A high speed TGV rail station sharing the same name would open two years later, joined directly onto the original RER concourse.
